Why I Participate

This is a 10-mile virtual walk fund raiser in memory of my beloved Sonny and Chiba, who both had cancers multiple times in their lives and died within weeks of each other. I honor their legacy in hopes that someday a cure can be found. The facts are that cancer is the number one killer of dogs over 1 year old, 50% of all dogs over 10 years old will get it, and 1 in 4 dogs will die from it.  This spells heartbreak for many families.

Sonny and Chiba’s Story

In August 2016, Chiba was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma. She started on chemotherapy immediately. Two weeks later, Sonny had a seizure, and after tests and scans, was diagnosed with a glioma brain tumor. In the end, Sonny lasted 8 weeks. Chiba lived 5 months. Over the years, Sonny had low grade mast cell tumors, round cell sarcoma, high grade mast cell, and adenocarcinoma and successfully fought off each of these conditions through surgeries, and chemotherapy. Chiba had earlier episodes of mast cell tumors before getting lymphoma. She went through 5 months of 7 different drug protocols until everything stopped working. It was a rough and very sad experience in the last few weeks.

Because both Sonny and Chiba spent so much time at the hospital before they died, this walk is from my house in Rancho Penasquitos to the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Sorrento Valley (vshsd.com), which is the last place either of them went before they came home for the last time and died the next day. It is about 10 miles.  VSH doctors and their dedicated staff did everything they could for my babies and over the years, saved Sonny's life at least twice. The Oncology team did everything possible for Chiba through her lymphoma journey.

How You Can Help

By making a donation to this fund raiser (just click on Support Me) , you will be helping to fund the needed research in order to find cures for all these cancers. Every dollar matters, and it could be yours that funds the cure. Because this is a Virtual Walk, you will receive a custom commemorative racing bib for any donation, and an extra gift for donations over $50.  The date of the live walk is Weds 6/28 in the early morning. Sonny & Chiba’s names are painted in the F.A.C.E Tree of Life mural (face4pets.com) outside of the hospital, I will be posting pictures on Facebook and Instagram, and anyone interested will be able to track my walk on the GPS app Locatoweb by going to the website www.locatoweb.com and searching for Sonny & Chiba 10.
